Frankenstein Empire
One project we did in humanities this quarter is a Frankenstein Empire. Our job was to research an empire that ruled around 1300s - 1700s and with a group create our own empire inspired by them. My group consisted of 5 members. I researched the Ming and Qing dynasty that ruled in China while others researched the Ottoman, Russian, and Mughal Empires. We then discussed the success and downfalls the different empires had. We created our own empire with the traits we desired and named it the Grumpy Bear Empire. We created slides that went over our empire’s political structure, geography, economy, social hierarchy, and military strength. Afterwards we presented our project to 1 member of the other groups who created their own Frankenstein empires! This was a new way of presenting for me, but it was really fun, and I would like to try presenting another project the same way.
Throughout this project I used my global awareness skill to research about the great Ming and Qing dynasty that ruled from1368 until 1644 throughout China after the collapse of the Mongol empire. I learned about the emperors and rulers that inherited the thrones afterwards. I also learned about China’s geography and advantage of production and resources due to the large amount of land they controlled. Their culture was rich just like many of the other empires I learned about because of my peers. We all used our communication skills to teach one another about what we learned about our empires. We asked questions and shared ideas.
I am most proud of my group member’s collaboration with one another. My group members and I weren't well acquainted with each other, but we ended up sharing our ideas quite well. Everyone imputed their thoughts and opinions. Although we shared our ideas well it was a bit difficult to come to an agreement about some of the details for our empire. We had to make sure everyone was included as well as have a say on how our empire would rule. If I could do this project again, I would try to help my group be more organized and prepared. We forgot to share the project slides with one of the members which caused a problem, that member wasn't able to write the information on the slide. On the last workday we changed our slides entirely because the layout wasn’t very professional. We did well but we could have achieved the same result or a better one if we were more organized from the start of the assignment. Also, I would try to make more eye contact with the audience while presenting.
