Final Creature Report Presentation + Essay
|
In marine science class, for our quarter 3 final we had to do a final creature report presentation. Our other creature reports were done in groups of 4 students which covered one family of an ocean creature. This time, since it was our final, we had to do it individually and choose a species we had learned about in class recently. Between sharks, octopus, and whales I decided to go with Cetorhinus maximus, also known as the Basking Shark. We then wrote a research paper over the course of a week. Once done, we had to summarize our research essay into a presentation to share with the class. We had to cover all the main topics such as: anatomical characteristics, unique behavior, distribution, biological niche, and threats to the species.

I used my information skills during this project. In the beginning I spent time learning about the basking shark and gathering important information about this species. Using my resources, I searched through government and nonprofit websites, read articles and watched videos of these amazing sharks to get all the facts. Once I gathered all the information, I organized everything under the topics I stated above. Then I used my organized facts to write a research essay that flowed well and covered everything important about the basking shark. I am most proud of my slide show I presented to the class. The template I chose was really nice and aesthetic. I was able to organize all the facts on the slides without overdoing it with too much writing or overwhelming information. I had a great time sharing with my peers what I learned about the basking shark. The grade I received on my presentation was 19/20, which I am satisfied with.
I think I improved my information skills in the sense of organization. I struggle with organizing information, sometimes even my own thoughts so I put more effort during this project to improve that. As I did research and gathered information I categorized every bit of information into a topic my essay was going to cover. This allowed me to write a cohesive essay that was informational but easy to comprehend.

Initially, I was worried about researching the basking shark. Not much is known about this shark species so it took me more time than I had planned to learn about this species. I searched many sources to confirm information as well as find any other small details that might be worth mentioning in my essay or presentation.
If I could do this assignment again, I would add more information about the threats these sharks face. My slide only had points for the threats they face and did not have more in depth information about the threats. Towards the end of the assignment, I felt rushed, and I did not leave myself enough time to elaborate on this portion of the slides.
I have done a few presentations on animal species before in science and biology a few years ago. Although all the presentations were on land animals, this is the only time I recall doing a presentation on a marine species.
In the future I will need to gather information to my peers, so it is great that I practice these skills and continue to improve them. While learning about the basking shark I learned more about the ocean ecosystem as well as the threats it faces. Learning about these threats will help in the future when learning about the ocean and climate change.
