Homegoing Chapter SummaryIn my humanities class we read the fictional novel Homegoing, written by Yaa Gyasi. The book revolves around the character Maame and her descendants. Her family tree breaks into two parts, one daughter stays in Africa during the Atlantic Slave Trade and her other daughter is sent away to be a slave for the rest of her life in America.

During this project I used my interpersonal skills. We divided all the topics amongst each other and I was assigned history. Working with my group but at the same time keeping myself accountable for my own work was important. I tried not to lean too much on my group members and made sure I could contribute to the presentation. I gathered the information from the chapter and summarized it into three events on the slides.
I am most proud of how I presented during class. I was a bit nervous because I wanted to share what the chapter was about and highlight key points so that everyone clearly understood what Willie’s life was like. After the presentation Ms.Terry praised me for good speaking and presenting. She said our group did great at summarizing and explaining what was most important from the chapter. |
Like I stated before I was worried I wouldn’t be able to share with my class properly what the chapter was truly about. But, I improved my interpersonal skills by talking to my group mates and making sure I understood the themes so I could present well to my peers.
I struggled finding the right words to summarize but not leave out any important details in the chapter.
There is very little I would change because I was proud of the final product and even got praise from my teacher. Though if I could do this assignment again I would probably offer to help my group mates some more and practice presenting a few more times.
This book reminded me of The Hate You Give because it also reviewed what life as an African American is like in the states. We wrote an essay and also presented about THUG my freshman year so it related to that learning in the past. Although I have never read a book that goes down a line of heritage and has little stories for each person's life, that was something new for me.
Understanding literature and summarizing are skills I will definitely use in the future. Most likely for work and school assignments. I plan to take ENG 125 in the future so being able to read a passage and summarize will be helpful.

Their line continues but each lives a very different life with different struggles and hardships. We didn’t have enough time to finish reading the book as a class so Ms. Terry assigned groups of 3 a chapter to summarize and present to the class. My group and I were given the chapter Willie. Willie moved to Harlem with her husband but she lived through a traumatic event that caused the couple to split. She raised their child on her own and met another man and had a second child with him. Throughout her life she struggled to work as a singer like she wanted and was constantly discriminated against because she was black. My group summarized the chapter, went over the character and their traits, reviewed the themes that occurred, and real life history events that appear in the chapter. We then created a slide with all this information and presented it to the class.
