Ancient Civilians Mini Project
In my humanities class, Mrs. Terry assigned us a mini group project regarding ancient civilizations. We had the freedom of choosing two out of seven civilizations to research during class. My group consisted of four members. Two of us split off to research the ancient civilization Nok located in today Nigeria and the other two group members researched Ancient Mesopotamia. Our goal for the assignment was to research two civilizations and then create a slideshow presentation to compare the two. We covered the time period the civilization thrived, how they functioned, what tools they used, and what archeological discoveries have been found over the years. During this project I used my global awareness skills to study the ancient civilization of Nok and learned about the culture. I was also able to collaborate with my peers to learn about Mesopotamia and compare and contrast what made the two different. Another way I used this skill was not only by thinking about these past groups but also how they relate to my “civilization” and how many of the tools they used then made their way into my day to day life. I am most proud of my ability to collaborate with my peers and evenly split up the work. We found an efficient way to learn about both ancient civilizations and create a presentation to deliver our information.
A challenge I overcame during this project was completing it in only two class days which were cut in half due to SLC week. My group and I had to plan the best way to use the time we were given to complete the presentation.
If I could do this assignment again I would try to compare and contrast the two more rather than just stating information about the two and letting the audience compare them. It would have been nice to have a slide solely for comparing the two. I have done a similar project like this in Ms. Terry’s class and I used the same skills as then and even strengthened them through practice. I can apply what I learned throughout this project in the future when I have to work in groups to complete a task. I will be able to manage my work and contribute to the assignment or task we are doing while still being considerate of my peers and their ideas.
