Newsletter
With the honeycreeper project the objective was to put ourselves in the shoes of a Hawaiian honeycreeper. We were to understand the devastating situation they are currently in, as well as their ancestry and how genetic drift affected their roots. We were given a week to make a newsletter that consisted of 6 or more paragraphs in first person and photos of our bird of choice, mine being the Hawaii 'Amakihi. The first paragraphs were to talk about our life in Hawaii: what I eat, where my habitat is, and how it has changed over the years. As well as "how many of our species were left and where?" and "what could help our kind survive and flourish?" The last paragraphs talked about our ancestors and how we adapted from them.
I chose this assignment because it was unique and an interesting way of reviewing everything we had learned that quarter. It was honestly fun writing in first person and sympathizing with the Hawaiian honeycreepers. Presenting the information in a newsletter format was very creative! I was super proud with end the product.
I used two of my 21st century skills during this final project. With global awareness I learned about the Hawaiian honeycreepers as well as their culture and heritage. Although this assignment focuses on the scientific view of Hawaiian honeycreepers, they are also very important in Hawaiian culture; as there are only a few rare species native to these special islands. With my communication skills, I presented to my class about the life of the Hawaii 'Amakihi. I explained adaptive radiation and how it fits in the story of these unique birds, as well as the pilina or connection they all share.

This project showcases my ability to read and comprehend information and put it into my own words and understanding to present to an audience. At first I was a bit sceptical and concerned on how I was supposed to project my ideas while also talking in first person as the Hawaii 'Amakihi. I was also challenged with my vocabulary, I had to make sure I was properly using the scientific terms and vocabulary that was taught to us throughout the quarter.
Although I was proud of my article, I don't think my grade reflected my efforts. I received a 30/34 because I forgot to name a few sources. For this assignment we were given four sources and we were told to find at least one more for our newsletter. I was a bit confused if we were supposed to cite the sources given to us even if we did not use them. Instead of asking I just went with my gut feeling an decided not to ask or cite the sources, in result I got a few points taken off. I learned that I should never be shy to ask questions and school is a learning environment where it is acceptable to ask questions! |
