Argumentative Essay
For the entire 3rd quarter we focused on Hawaiian heroes, important historic figures in Hawaiian history. I chose Bernice Pauahi Bishop, a well known philanthropist and founder of the famous Kamehameha Schools. Besides the argumentative essay we did a game show, portrait, a day in the life journal, and a debate, all on the hero of our choice. For the essay we needed five paragraphs and three claims for the body paragraphs. It needed to include what we had reviewed last semester and this quarter, such as: complex sentences, proper nouns, and properly using semicolons.

I chose to present this assignment on my portfolio because I took a lot of time on this essay, it involved a lot of deep researching as there is not a lot of information on my hero because of how little we kept records of people and their lives. This was my first time writing an argumentative essay, it was a new form of writing for me and something I enjoyed learning to do. With argumentative writing you have to persuade your audience but also avoid getting emotional or aggressive. I received a 50/50 on this assignment!
With civil literacy and engagement I learned about the great impact Bernice had on my community, the Hawaiian Islands. She has founded over 30 schools and her land has funded the schools for ages. With my information skills I gathered as much as I could about this inspirational women, and wrote an essay arguing why she is an important figure in Hawaiian history.
This assignment was a bit challenging because it was my first time writing in this form. But, I did enjoy writing and learning about Pauahi. This shows my ability to take initiative in learning a topic that may not be my favorite but still put 100% effort in the assignment. Although I don't usually find history interesting, learning about Bernice and her impact on my home was super educational and enjoyable; I'd love to do this again.
I could definitely improve on my writing and if I could redo this assignment I would better prepare. I want to start reading more often and improve my ability to write and read, as well as expand my vocabulary. Next semester I plan on taking ENG 100 to improve my writing and reading comprehension, as this is a skill I will be using my whole life.
