Build a Life: Part-time Job Application
|
In our junior seminar class, we did a build your life assignment on the day we weren't working on our junior projects. For this assignment we had to find a part-time job, if we didn't already have one, that had requirements we could fulfill in our current position (no high school diploma) and that would work with our schedule (not during school hours). After we found a job that fit, we filled out a model job application. If the student already had a job, such as me, we would simply fill out the application if we were to apply for the position we are currently working. I filled out all the information, providing my skills, past education, work experience, and references.

This was a fun assignment as I never have had to fill out a job application or create a resume. The job I currently work only interviewed me when I applied. I used my civic literacy and engagement skills to complete this assignment. Throughout this assignment I thought about what it meant to be part of a work team, especially in a restaurant. I analyzed what mannerisms and skills my job requires as well as how I work in my community through this job. This job impacts my daily life and has taught me skills that I can use for future jobs and or tasks.
I enjoyed filling out the application and was most proud of my answers and professionalism. Like I said before I’ve never filled out an application like this before, so it was nice to write out on paper what I have to offer as a potential employee. I improved my civic literacy and engagement skills by exercising them while completing the application. I don’t often use this skill, so this assignment helps refresh/grow that skill throughout the process.
It was difficult to summarize and analyze good work traits about myself, think back on my experiences, and state my skills. It took some time as well as reworking how I wrote everything so it was clear and professional.
If I could do this assignment again I would spend a bit more time and add maybe a few more details. I would also write more in the “other information” section. I feel that by the end of the assignment I was just trying to complete it and got a little sloppy for that part. It’s hard to relate this to an assignment from the past because this was something very new to me. It did feel kind of similar to creating a portfolio. For both assignments I had to write about myself. This assignment will definitely help me with future learning such as when I have to fill out an application for another job or when I have to create a resume. Writing about myself in a professional manner is a skill I will need for the rest of my life.
